Individual Placement and Support (IPS)

What is IPS?

IPS is an evidence-based practice of supported employment for people with serious mental illness. The model incorporates eight principles:

  1. Zero exclusion
  2. Focus on competitive employment
  3. Rapid job search
  4. Targeted job development
  5. Client preferences
  6. Follow-along supports
  7. Integration of vocational and mental health treatment services
  8. Benefits counseling

The Library on this website provides a wide variety of resources such as training manuals, data collection sheets, example action/education/job search plans, a glossary of terms, and various templates. Two examples, the Job Support Plan and IPS Trainer’s Guide are available at the IPS Employment Center. Many of these materials may be useful for people with other types of disabilities as well. There are also training, educational, and personal story videos.

Why Did We Include It?

Identified as an evidence-based program as part of our systematic review, we chose this website because it offers over 100 resources covering a wide range of topics. A search field in the Library allows users to easily find resources they want.

Who Benefits?

Centers for Independent Living can use these resources to help their clients and to learn about what others are doing to support employment for people with disabilities.

How Can It Be Used?

Users can search the Library in order to find resources they need. Users can then adapt and modify the example resources to fit the specific needs of their clients. Users can also learn more about IPS and view success stories.
